Simple Yoga & Meditation/Mindfulness

Why Yoga for chronic pain management?

Persistent, chronic pain occurs when the body and mind are hypervigilant, & overprotective.

(See general chronic pain information in the following area).

There is often a fear of moving.

Yoga can help to –

  • Relax the body
  • Calm the mind
  • Increase trust in the body to move with ease
  • Understand the differences between `good` stress and `bad` stress.

Gentle movement & a careful progression of
exercise can improve self-confidence & trust in the body.

Understanding the normal stress response leads to an understanding of the flight/fright/freeze response, where the body may `freeze` in a holding, tense position.

Learn to recognise this response and use techniques to quiet the mind and body.

Become aware of triggers for tension and pain eg certain movements in the past which caused pain.

Yoga may
assist in

  • Improving flexibility & strength.
  • Strengthen the core trunk muscles.
  • Improve balance
  • Improve normal functional movements eg ability to get up & down safely off the floor
  • Improve sleep
  • Improve posture and alignment
  • Learn to notice & release `protective ` postures that may be hindering normal movement
  • Learn breathing techniques to aid focus & relaxation

The five core components of a yoga practice are

  • Movement
  • Breathing awareness & different techniques to calm the nervous system.
  • Meditation
  • Deep relaxation
  • Befriend the body
There are many techniques of meditation & relaxation.

Why meditation for pain management?

  • Breath awareness is a foundation of many  – this may include concentration & awareness, counting, focus, pattern changes.
  • Repetition of a word or phrase eg, `calm`,` I am relaxed`- phrases of importance to the self
  • Concentration on an object eg candle, nature scene
  • Focus on the senses eg listen to sounds, look at an object
  • Mindfulness is a specific technique that has been shown by research to reduce stress & improve emotional well-being.
